Student Support Services
In our schools, student support goes beyond the classroom. School teams can access specialized help from division-level professionals like school clinicians (School Psychologists, School Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and Speech-Language Pathologists). These experts work closely with teachers and families to understand and support students' unique needs. If needed, clinicians may join your child’s support team through a request for service process, which requires parent/guardian approval.
Together, these professionals form a network of care around your child, helping them thrive academically, behaviorally, socially, functionally, physically, communicatively, and emotionally.
If parents/guardians have concerns about how their child is doing at school, they are encouraged to begin by speaking with their child’s classroom teacher to collaboratively develop a plan of action. The teacher may reach out to the school’s student services team for further strategies and support.

Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)
Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a proactive framework that helps schools meet the needs of all students by identifying challenges early and providing the right support. It builds on the Response to Intervention (RTI) model, which uses a tiered approach to give extra help to students who need it. MTSS takes this further by looking at the bigger picture—school-wide practices and barriers that can impact learning for both students and educators. The goal is to create an inclusive, supportive environment for everyone.
In RTI, every student begins with strong, high-quality classroom instruction (Tier 1). If some students need more help, they receive targeted support in small groups (Tier 2). For students with more intensive needs, individualized support is provided (Tier 3)—while keeping them connected to the regular classroom. These supports are flexible and based on each student’s needs, not labels.

When all involved are working in place together, we can create a system of support that allows both students and educators to be successful. (used with permission: Novak Educational Consulting, July 2020)
